The United States is about to embark on the largest post-war reconstruction project since the Marshall Plan after World War II. And the effort could be a boon to some of America's largest industrial companies.
The war with Iraq is nearly over. U.S. government officials have been preparing for months to use American companies to rebuild the country. A division of the State Department has been actively looking for contractors to fix Iraq's seaports and infrastructure and to help guide its banking and educational systems once the war is over.
U.S. government officials has sent out requests for proposals to rebuild eight separate parts of Iraqi life. Federal spending on these projects could reach into the tens of billions of dollars.
